General information of FloreanaFloreana is the smallest and the least populated (with about 180 inhabitants, based on estimates) of the four inhabited islands of the archipelago, but the most famous one. Its reputation has even crossed the borders of Ecuador to the world. Floreana has indeed a sulfurous reputation. One that is made of mysterious disappearances, deaths and poisonings. A reputation made of sweat, exertion, hard labor, perseverance. A reputation of setbacks and of successes too. Through the centuries Floreana has attracted people from all over the world: navigators, idealists, convicts or just ordinary citizens in search of a better world. Year after year, Floreana has been the scene of the worst vicissitudes, the most frightening tragedies, the most incredible stories.But Floreana has not changed that much since the time when the Norwegian immigrants, Dr. Ritter, the Wittmers or the Cruzes first set foot upon its barren shores. Today there is of course electricity, water and even a few cars on the island. Tourists have long ago replaced the American millionaires traveling around the world, the scientists, the explorers and other adventurers, who have at one time or another, paid a visit to these world famous settlers. And yet Floreana is still one of the most isolated islands in the world, where people rely upon themselves for their everyday living. An island where mystery and magic may still be felt up in the air, where time seems to have stopped some fifty years ago. Puerto Velasco Ibarra’s nightlife is really limited. Exist only one Bar and no restaurants. The Pension Wittmer however can provide some food after reservation. |
